During the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2021, Metallica was automatically censored by Twitch, replacing the performance with lame muzak.

Metallica is known as one of the most vocal bands when it comes to music streaming and online piracy, even suing early P2P network Napster twenty years ago. It’s therefore painfully ironic that this happened.

As the band started playing “For Whom The Bell Tolls” at the opening ceremony at this year’s BlizzCon many viewers were treated to what happens when you don’t clear rights with an artist. The 1984 heavy metal classic was replaced by something a lot less “heavy.”

As streamers muted their streams to avoid DMCA trouble, 12 seconds into the performance on Blizzard’s Twitch channel things took a hilarious turn. The audio was replaced by something else. See for yourself.

According to reports, it seems that Blizzard didn’t obtain all the rights needed for its Twitch gaming channel. Oh, the Internet – the gift that keeps on giving.
