Twitter is launching its operations in Africa. Twitter chooses Ghana to headquarter its first African-based team.

The news was shared in a blog post, announcing open positions for several roles in Ghana.

To establish its presence in Africa, Twitter chooses Ghana. The company explained that the country’s support of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet were the main reasons behind the choice. Ghana was also recently designated as the host of The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

“To truly serve the public conversation, we must be more immersed in the rich and vibrant communities that drive the conversations taking place every day across the African continent … We still have much to learn, but we are excited to listen, learn and engage. Public conversation is essential to solving problems, building shared ideas, and pushing us all forward together. We can’t wait for the next step on that journey.”

The blog post announcing the choice explained that Twitter is now looking to fill several roles on teams including communications, design, engineering, marketing, and product. All job listings are available on the Twitter Careers website.

While the positions will be headquartered in Ghana, all new team members will be onboarded remotely due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Director of product management for global markets Uche Adegbite and product lead Kayvon Beykpour also added that Twitter has already invested in local communities in Africa through partnerships with Afrochella in Ghana, Amref Health Africa in Kenya, The HackLab Foundation in Ghana, and Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative.
